Ambuluwawa

Ambuluwawa,

Ambuluwawa, located near Gampola in Sri Lanka's Central Province, is a prominent mountain renowned for its biodiversity complex and the distinctive Ambuluwawa Tower. Standing at approximately 1,090 meters (3,567 feet) above sea level, the mountain offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including notable peaks such as Pidurutalagala, Sri Pada (Adam's Peak), and the Knuckles Mountain Range.

*Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex* Established in 2009, the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is celebrated as Sri Lanka's first multi-religious sanctuary. The complex encompasses a Buddhist temple, a Hindu kovil, a Muslim mosque, and a Christian church, symbolizing religious harmony and unity. The area is rich in flora, hosting over 200 plant species, which contribute to its cool climate and serene environment.

*Ambuluwawa Tower* A central feature of the complex is the Ambuluwawa Tower, also known as the "White Tower." This 48-meter (157.4 feet) high conical structure resembles a stylized Buddhist stupa and is accessible via a spiraling staircase that narrows as it ascends. Climbing the tower rewards visitors with a 360-degree view of the lush landscapes, rivers, and distant mountains. However, the ascent can be challenging due to the tower's height and the staircase's design, making it less suitable for individuals with a fear of heights. *Visiting Ambuluwawa* Ambuluwawa is approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Kandy and can be reached by car or public transportation to Gampola, followed by a local tuk-tuk ride to the complex. Visitors can choose to hike to the summit or drive up a well-maintained road. The site is open to the public, with a nominal entrance fee charged for maintenance purposes.

*Best Time to Visit* The ideal time to visit Ambuluwawa is during the dry season, from December to April, when the weather is favorable, and the skies are clear, enhancing the panoramic views. Early mornings or late afternoons are recommended to avoid midday heat and to experience the site during sunrise or sunset. *Cultural and Natural Significance* Ambuluwawa is not only a testament to Sri Lanka's commitment to religious harmony but also a beacon for environmental conservation.

The complex's design and its emphasis on biodiversity reflect a harmonious blend of cultural and natural heritage, making it a significant landmark in the region. *Safety Considerations* Visitors are advised to exercise caution when climbing the tower, especially during wet conditions, as the steps can become slippery. It's also important to note that the staircase becomes increasingly narrow toward the top, which may be uncomfortable for some individuals. In summary, Ambuluwawa offers a unique blend of cultural, religious, and natural attractions, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring Sri Lanka's central highlands.

The Ambuluwawa Tower is a unique, whimsical spiral tower and temple complex perched on a hilltop high above Gampola town. Ambuluwawa mountain peak sits at 3,567 metres above sea level, with the tower itself measuring 54 metres from bottom to top of the spiral. The tower and complex is a relatively new addition to the area and was completed in 2006. It’s a one of a kind complex, being a multi-religious place that is home to a Buddhist Temple, Hindu Temple, a Christian Church, and a Muslim Mosque. It’s considered a peaceful place where people from all backgrounds can come together in harmony.

The complex is also a botanical garden, with a beautiful landscaped garden surrounding the temples and tower with a variety of plants and even a small lake and several small ponds. Now, the tower itself has become the main attraction within the complex and is certainly the part that stands out the most (you can see the tower from Gampola town). The white cone shaped tower features a spiral staircase that clings to the outside of the roof and winds its way all the way to the very pointed tip. It’s definitely something that belongs in a fantasy movie, making it a unique landmark in Sri Lanka.

To reach the Ambuluwawa Tower from Colombo, you can take a train to Gampola, which takes approximately 3 hours and 26 minutes and costs between Rs. 240 - Rs. 750.  From Gampola, you can hire a tuk-tuk to take you up to the tower complex on the hill above town. It's only 6 km from the bus station to the tower itself, up a steep, winding road. The cost for a tuk-tuk ride up to the tower and back from the bus station is around Rs. 1,500 (USD $5), including waiting time.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Colombo to Gampola, which takes approximately 2 hours and 47 minutes and costs between $7 - $11.  From Gampola, you can follow the same procedure as above to reach the tower.

The ticket price and entry for the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is 2,000 LKR (USD $7) per person for foreigners as of 2024. The ticket office and gates are open from 8.30 am to 5 pm every day. The road up to the tower is closed after these hours, so don’t arrive too late expecting a sunset view.

It's best to visit the tower on a clear day to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area, including Gampola town, the mountains in the distance, and the lush, green valley. Avoid weekends and arrive early to avoid the crowds, especially in high season from December until April.

Be prepared for lots of stairs if climbing the tower, although it’s not overly challenging physically. Don’t carry a big backpack, just take a small daypack or handbag as it becomes very inconvenient when trying to pass people on the narrow upper sections of the tower. Allow up to an hour to visit the complex (on top of the transport to/from) which should give you enough time to admire the views, climb the tower and walk around; however, this might increase if the tower has a queue. The tower is exposed to the elements, so wear a hat and sunglasses if it’s sunny. Bring enough water and snacks as there’s no shop or vendors at the complex (you could purchase food in Gampola town if needed). Watch out for the monkeys around the garden; don’t leave your possessions unattended or feed the animals.

From a hostel door in Kandy, it was around 4.5 hours round trip to Ambuluwawa Tower altogether, so allow a decent half a day for the trip.

I hope this information helps you plan your visit to the Ambuluwawa Tower.
